SCALES: The Key To Writing And Playing All Music
If you've made it this far you have learned the basic foundations for playing the guitar. Again, this has been a brief introduction to the layout of my book. As stated before, the remaining chapters are pure playing. Below are some samples of what is included in the 57 chapters of Total Scales Techniques and Applications.
Chapter 2 includes some highly recommended reading on the Natural Scale, and Minor and Major Root Notes.
Chapter 4 is where you finally start playing the scales. The book starts with the open E position, playing 3 notes per string. Picking strokes, as well as finger positions are detailed for the reader.
Here is a scan including a clip of the open E position. |

Every new scale position overlaps the previous position. The first 8 will get you from the open position up to the higher notes starting at the 12th fret. This is followed by a "Quick Start" introduction to guitar solo's.
APPLICATIONSChapter 5 introduces scale applications. Applications are patterns applied to the scale notes giving your music more melody. This will open up a whole new world to your playing. You'll find your notes sounding less like "scales", and more like music.

TECHNIQUES Starting at Chapter 6 are techniques which will alter the notes you are playing. These techniques include palm mutes, vibrato, string bends, and more. Each technique is introduced, then mixed in with a scale and application that has been previously taught in the book. This approach keeps things fun and interesting.
At this point we are only on Chapter 6. There are 57 total in my book. There are still many combinations to learn. Scale positions above the 12th fret. Tons of advanced techniques and applications. Double note patterns. String Skipping. Not to mention Key changes, modes, and other scales.
